AVA’S POV
I couldn’t breathe. Every part of me froze.
Laura? A murderer? It felt impossible, but the look in his ces told me he wasn’t lying.
What would he benefit from lying to me though?
Nothing!
I tried to swallow the lump in my throat, but it wouldn’t go away. “What do you mean? How did she…?” My voice trailed off. I couldn’t even finish the sentence.
Alex’s face darkened, and he leaned in, his eyes cold. “As you know, Laura and my brother were married. She was cheating on him, and when he found out, he planned to divorce her. She knew once he did she wouldn’t get the money she thought she deserved.”
My chest tightened. I always knew Laura could be cruel, but this? This was something darker. I couldn’t wrap my mind around it.
“Then she did something terrible,” Alex continued, his voice filled with bitterness. “She set up a car accident to kill him. She thought if he died, she’d get the insurance money. But he didn’t die. Instead, he’s in a vegetative state now.”
I gasped, my body going cold. “She tried to kill her husband?” The words barely left my mouth, but they felt so wrong. It didn’t make sense.
I knew Laura was ruthless, but this… This was beyond anything I had imagined.
Alex nodded. “Yeah. And now he’s lying in a hospital bed, barely alive, all because of her.”
I couldn’t believe it. Laura had planned to kill her ex–husband over money. The woman who had made my life a living hell was capable of something this horrible?
1 pressed my hand to my forehead, trying to steady my breath. I couldn’t wrap my head around it. “How could she do that?” I whispered. “How could anyone do that?”
Alex’s eyes were bloodshot now, his voice colder than ever. She’s more evil than you think she is. And I’m not going to let her get away with it.”
I looked at him, still trying to understand. “What are you going to do?”
I needed to know how he was going to punish iny nemesis.
But he didn’t answer right away. He just stared at me, as if weighing his words. Finally, he stood up, his expression unreadable. “I’ll handle it. Don’t worry about Laura.”
But I couldn’t stop worrying. How could I not? This wasn’t just about Laura anymore, she was involved in my life.
I wanted to ask more, but just then, my phone buzzed in my bag.
I looked at the screen. It was Jason calling. I didn’t want to answer. I couldn’t.
Alex noticed, his eyes flicking to my phone before meeting mine. “You should talk to him, he has been calling since you were unconscious,” he said quietly.
I shook my head, my heart pounding, “I can’t. Not now.‘

The last thing I wanted was to talk to Jason, especially now hat I knew he had been choosing a heartless soul over
- me.
My phone buzzed again. He was calling again.
Can’t he just give up?
I stared at it for a long moment, my heart racing in my chest. “I can’t do this anymore,” I whispered.
I turned off the phone and shoved it into my bag, not wanting to hear his voice and whatever excuse he was going to cook up to tell me again.
I could see the worry in Alex’s eyes as he stood up, preparing to go.
“I have something urgent to handle at the company,” he said, his tone reluctant. He looked at me for a moment, like he was trying to make sure I’d be alright
“I don’t feel right leaving you alone,” he added, pulling out his phone. “I’ll have one of my female assistants come to stay with you
“Thank you, Alex, but that’s not necessary,” I said quickly, shaking my head.
He frowned. “Ava, I’m serious. You shouldn’t be alone right now. I won’t have peace of mind if I leave you to yourself.”
I must admit I was moved by his words.
“I’m fine,” I insisted, though we both knew I wasn’t. “If you must, just call Sally. She’s my friend, and I’d feel better with her here.”
He looked at me for a moment, then reluctantly nodded. “Alright, I’ll call her on my way down.” Even as he agreed, I could tell he was still worried.
As soon as he left, I felt the weight of everything crashing down on me. I was alone again, but this time, the emptiness felt worse.
It didn’t take long before Sally arrived, she took one look at me and frowned. “What happened, Ava?”
I managed a shaky laugh, but it didn’t reach my eyes. “Alex knows about the baby,” I said quietly, my voice barely above a whisper.
I knew she wanted to know about my health but that wasn’t important, I needed to tell her the more pressing
news.
Sally blinked, surprised. “What? How?”
“I don’t know, Sal,” I said, my voice barely audible.
She sat down beside me, concern written all over her face. “But… does Jason know?”
“No,“Twhispered. “He doesn’t know. And I’m not planning on telling him.”
Sally placed a hand on mine. “You don’t have to deal with this alone, Ava. You’ve got me.”
I nodded. I knew I could count on Sally, apart from my baby she was one of the best things that had happened to
- me.
Just then, she raised an eyebrow, her face turning serious. What exactly happened between you and Alex?”
I let out a sigh. “It’s hard to explain,” I said, not sure how to even begin.

Sally’s eyes were sharp, “Ava, people have been talking at work lately. They think you and Alex are a couple now. Some are even saying he’s your fiancé.”
I froze, staring at her. “What?”
Sally’s eyes locked into mine. “Yeah. Since you and Alex left the office together, people have been whispering about it.”
I felt my face go red. “This is a problem,” I muttered.
“I know,” Sally said, her tone serious. “But it’s going to be hard to explain. Especially when the rumors reach the reporter’s ears.”
I didn’t know what to think. Everything felt out of control. was pregnant, Jason didn’t know, Laura was a danger, and now people were saying Alex was my fiancé.
I didn’t know how I would deal with all this.
