Chapter 14
“You motherfucker!” my father cursed and immediately hung
- up.
That was the one swear word I hated the most now.
I called him right back and warned coldly, “Swear at me again, and you can forget about me supporting you in old age.”
He froze and then said in a softened tone, “I just lost my temper. Gracie, don’t take it to heart-”
I hung up before he could finish.
The next day, I arrived at the courthouse as scheduled, only to be told that my father had withdrawn the lawsuit.
I was surprised.
But soon I realized why.
He was afraid I’d uncover the truth and demand him to return the money he’d taken.
My injuries had mostly healed, and I still had some time before returning to work.
So I focused on investigating my mother’s death.
The second–floor study of the Parrish’s residence contained a lot of old stuff. Maybe I’d find something useful there.
But I had no desire to see those people again.

After some hesitation, I returned to the Parrish’s residence.
My stepmother was lounging on the couch, munching sunflower seeds. Her eyes lit up at the sight of me. “Gracie, you finally came to your senses! Are you taking us to withdraw the money?”
Before I knew she wasn’t my birth mother, I always found excuses for her no matter how much she favored Leila.
Now that I’ve learned the truth, I started to see that she was rotten to the core.
I’m just here to grab something; I replied indifferently and headed upstairs.
There were a lot of things in the study, but they were mostly my father’s collections.
I searched everywhere yet found nothing useful.
Just as I was about to give up, I noticed something like a notebook on top of an old cabinet in the corner.
The cabinet was tall. I had to pull over a chair and stand on it to reach the notebook.
It was a dusty, old diary.
I flipped open the cover and saw my mother’s name on the first page.
My heart pounded.
Just as I was about to read further, hurried footsteps approached.

I hurriedly stuffed the diary into my clothes and put the chair back in place.
The door burst open, and all four of them came into sight.
My father spoke first, “Gracie, did you come home with good news?”
Casually, I grabbed a random book from the shelf. “No. Just came for some reading material.”
Leila’s face was still swollen from my slap.
“You must be here to steal something!” she snapped and snatched the book from my hands. She flipped through it wildly, only to find nothing.
I let out a silent breath of relief, glad I’d hidden the diary in time.
