Chapter 8
Yetta pretended to scold. “Minly.”
Lillian wasn’t a fan of verbal sparring. It felt pointless and exhausting. But it worked wonders at Yetta and Mindy–they’d get riled up like wind–up toys, quickly losing their cool.
So, Lillian shot back. “The Wilson name has already been tarnished by your dad. Is there any left for me to ruin
“You! Mindy exclaimed, faming. She had expected Lillian, who grew up in a struggling town, to be timid, or resentful towards Bradley while secretly flaunting his guilt. Or at the very east, she thought Lillian would show off a bit like a newfound wealth.
Lillian was nothing like that, and Mindy felt frustrated. But after second thought, she felt a bit relieved–anyway, despite some sharp replies, Lillian didn’t act any better.
Whether she’s just clueless or really looks down on the Wilson heiress title, it doesn’t matter. It all depends on how long Dad can tolerate her arrogance. Mindy thought as she turned to Bradley. “Dad, why don’t you say anything to her?”
Bradley was a decisive figure in the business world and a strict father. Even with good grades, Mindy didn’t dare act spoiled. Bradley’s face looked grim, but he didn’t say much. He simply told Lillian, “Your grades are good, but you skip class too often. If we want to get you into Fillcrest High, it’s going to take more time.
With the SATs coming up, it’s not worth interrupting your studies. After all, Sillview High isn’t that much worse thart Fillcrest
Lillian sneered, “All the privileged kids in Jerisburg go to Fillcrest High. Are you saying it’s too costly, or are you worried they’ll find out I’m your daughter?”
Lillian had spent at least half the year abroad, and even when she was in the country, she hardly attended class. If she hadn’t paid to keep her enrollment active, she would have been kicked out a long time ago.
But with Bradley’s connections, it didn’t matter if she skipped classes, and even if she were a complete fool, he could still get her into Fillcrest High
‘Does he really think I’m just some easy–to–fool country girl? Lilian scoffed in her heart.
Before Bradley could say more, Lillian picked up the bank card from the table. “That’s enough. You don’t need to worry about my education. I’ll get into Fillcrest High myself.
“As for Sillview…” she paused, considering Bradley’s superstition. You can go there and maybe pick up something modern.” Mindy jumped in, “Fillcrest High isn’t a place you can just waltz into at will”
“Does she really think she can go without Dad’s help? Does she believe that little bit of money on that card will buy her way in? What a naive country bumpkin,‘ she sneered silently.
Bradley gripped his fork tightly, his voice strained as he said, ‘Go wait in the living room. Yetta will take you to the hospital
soon.”
Earlier, he had mentioned he would take Lillian himself, but now he didn’t–it was clear he was mad.
“Tll take care of my own health. Just make sure the medical bills are covered,” Lillian replied, shoving her hands in her jeans pockets even without looking back.
She wasn’t lacking in money, and the assets of the Wilson family hardly interested her. But one thing mattered–the Wilsons owed her big time..

Now, nobody in the Wilson family felt like eating. Bradley headed off to work, Mindy went to school, and Yetta slammed her fork down, getting ready to leave, too. She looked over at Yoland, who had been eating quietly.
Lillian went upstairs to find General, and just on the short walk, she sorted out getting into Fillcrest High using her phone.. Any school would do, she just wanted to push back against Brady and make things uncomfortable for him.
After scrolling through her contacts for a while, she finally found the right number among a list of old men
The other line picked up right away, and the man, who was over sixty, sounded like a kid on Christmas morning. “Lillian! You actually called me? Have I studied so hard that my eyes are playing tricks on me?”
After the call, Lillian casually opened WhatsApp to check her messages and saw a new chat from “Old Timer, which was how she labeled Jesse’s grandfather.
There was no greeting from his side, so she skipped the niceties She liked jesse well enough, but she had no desire to get to know his family. Especially not parents like “Jesse’s dad.”
Meanwhile, at the Lewis residence, Samuel reached out to Jesse Can I have my phone back?”
Jesse, having finished his task, handed the phone back without hesitation.
Samuel glanced at the screen and as he had expected, Jesse had approved Lillian’s friend request from last night. He pocketed the phone and said, “We’re going to be late for preschool.
Idllian took General out of the door. An hour later, they arrived at a research base, where large golden letters spelled out “Jerisburg Biological Research Base, shone in the sunlight.
The soldiers at the gate stood at attention and stopped Lillian. After checking her fingerprint, they saluted her and let her through.
The base was massive, packed with research institutes that had all sorts of signs. It was surrounded by walls that kept it cut off from the outside world, and soldiers were always on patrol.
Carrying General, Lillian navigated the site confidently, her goal clear in her mind. Soon, she and General reached a building labeled “National Key Research Base.”
After scanning her iris, Lillian was allowed inside. She took the elevator straight to the third floor and stepped into a lab. A guy spotted her and called out, “Lillian’s here, with the X0109 test subject.”
Everyone paused what they were doing, and the room sank into an eerie silence.
Ignoring their stares, Lillian walked straight to a man, handed over General, and produced a folder. “Here’s all the data for X0109 from the past month. No unusual events have occurred during this time.”
“Got it,” the man replied, taking General and the folder before heading to the lab next door.
Just then, Lillian stepped into his path and warned, “Don’t do anything you shouldn’t.”
Catching her serious gaze, the man promptly replied, “Don’t worry.”
Right after General was taken away, an older man in a lab coat and a middle–aged man rushed over, heading straight for Lillian. The higher–ups have denied your request to leave. Shouldn’t you consider withdrawing it”
Lillian replied, “Approval? You’ve misunderstood. That wasn’t a request; it was a notification.”
The older man adjusted his glasses, puzzled “Is it just because you can’t bear to part with those animal? Do you realize if this technology succeeds-

Lillian interrupted him thus nothing to do with that. I wasn’t sermanent stall member anyway. My task is complete.
The older man insisted. Then why are you leaving! Do you know how many people would do anything just to step inside this place even once?
