Chapter 7
“You lost, Claire. I heard Ethan plans to announce his mate tonight. Guess who’s going to be by his side?” Her voice dripped with triumph.
To be honest, this took me by surprise. This was the first time she had ever showed me her
rue colors.
I let out a low growl. Once, as a Luna candidate, I would have looked down on her, but she’d seized every opportunity to push me aside.
With a cold laugh, I replied, “Aren’t you supposed to be the symbol of independent
she–wolves? Why cling to a man, then?”
She was stunned, then snapped, “I can easily get what I want, Claire. You’ll always be a
failure next to me.”
I glanced at the photo she sent–a picture of her at the banquet, wearing Luna’s jewelry, smiling next to Ethan.
Suddenly, I realized she might be right. When it came to Vanessa, I always lost.
But I wouldn’t give her the satisfaction. “Then why hasn’t he made you his official Luna
yet?”
The line went silent, and then she hung up.
Ultimately, Ethan didn’t love her enough. If he had, he wouldn’t still consider her just his mistress, would he?
Or maybe he was going to make her Luna eventually. Either way, it didn’t concern me enough.
That evening, after settling into the dorm, I met with Mark at a bustling cafe to discuss our project plans.

“Maybe that’s the point of moving forward,” I sighed.
now,
Mark and I talked for hours and soon it was a late into the evening. Feeling like I was finally
moving forward, I returned to the dorms, ready to get some sleep.
But right before bed, Ethan called again. “Where are you? Why aren’t you home? I was going to make the announcement tonight, but you weren’t there, so I postponed it. How about tomorrow? I’ll introduce you to everyone then.”
“I’m staying in the dorms now, Ethan. The hospital’s busy, and I need to be close by. Handle
it yourself.”
He paused. “When you’re free, let me know. I’ll pick you up.”
“Will do. Anything else?”
“No, that’s it.”
“Great. I’m hanging up now,” I said, ending the call.
Ethan tried calling back several times, but I ignored him and eventually turned off my phone.
The next day, as I was leaving for lunch with colleagues, I saw him waiting outside, looking disheveled, his shirt wrinkled, and his face unshaven.
“Claire, can we talk?” He asked immediately.
With people staring, I led him to a nearby café. As soon as we sat down, he said, “You’re so busy now, you don’t even return my calls. Not one single call?”
I’d forgotten I’d turned off my phone.
“I’ve been reassigned to the ER. I’m on duty, so I can’t always answer. I hope you understand.” I cut him off.

Back then, he’d accuse me of not valuing him. “Do you want me to leave you? How can you care for patients when you ignore me? With your poor skills, how can you handle
emergencies?”
I’d always folded under his scrutiny, doubting my own abilities.
But one day, a young pup came into the clinic with a seed lodged in his throat, struggling to breathe. I had to act fast, knowing that a single hesitation could be fatal.
After successfully dislodging the seed, a Beta colleague patted me on the shoulder, saying, “Good thing you were here. You handled it perfectly.”
In that moment, I realized I had been capable all along. That experience solidified my
confidence.
Looking at Ethan across from me now, I no longer cared if he acknowledged my worth.
Ethan looked at me helplessly. “The ER is intense, with rogue wolves coming in daily, and it’s dangerous. Are you sure you can handle it?”
“Of course. Every doctor worries about the lives they can’t save. That’s the weight we carry.
He studied me, then said, “Claire, you’ve changed so much. I feel like I’m losing you. Our anniversary is in two days. Can we at least have dinner?”
“You lost me long ago, Ethan. Have dinner by yourself.” I stood up to leave.
Seeing my resolve, his expression darkened.
Before he could speak, I added, “We’re over, Ethan. Stop contacting me.”
He stood, his voice tense. “Is this about Vanessa? She came by to check on me, but I didn’t let her stay. I even told her to stop coming completely. I planned to propose to you, Claire. I know I’ve neglected you, but no one should tolerate their mate overstepping boundaries. I won’t let it happen again.”
Looking at his desperate face, I asked, “So you know you crossed a line with Vanessa? Using ‘friendship‘ to justify your actions–Ethan, why would I stay with you?”

Ethan’s face went pale, unable to reply.
I continued, “Pack up and move out of my house. I’m selling it.”
“Selling it? Where will you live?”
“I’ll find a place. It’s no longer your concern.”
than tried to speak, but I’d already walked out.
My time was too valuable to waste on his regrets.
As Mark and I prepared to leave for our
