Chapter 17
Lucy assumed I was only playing hard–to–get, so she quickly spoke up. “No, that filthy woman isn’t suitable. When Jeffrey and I got tested, they found she had multiple STDs. I
despise that woman.”
At the mention of STDS, my expression changed. Jeffrey hastened to reassure me, “Don’t worry; everything can be treated. We were careful and used protection, so you definitely haven’t been infected. Once we’re remarried, we can start IVF, and by the time you have the child, I’ll be fully cured. You have nothing to worry about.”
I couldn’t believe how thick–skinned they were. I rolled my eyes. “Worried? About you? You’re joking, right? I’m only concerned about myself.”
“Honestly, Lucy, your words are finally making sense.”
Lucy, caught off guard, stammered, “Yes, yes, I’m always reasonable. That’s why you should listen to me and remarry Jeffrey.”
I shook my head. “Not that. I meant when you said that people who can’t have children are cursed. Your son is the cursed one. Such a person shouldn’t even raise someone else’s child. With his twisted values, what good could he teach anyone?”
Jeffrey and Lucy, infuriated, instinctively rose to hit me. I quickly made my way to the door, only to open it and find the police about to knock.
Before I could speak, the officers entered, restraining Lucy and Jeffrey, and then said, “You two are being summoned on suspicion of attempted murder.”
What? Attempted murder?
I grabbed one of the officers. “What’s going on? What did they do?”

I didn’t hear from any of the three again–until about two weeks later. When I arrived home
from work. I found Lucy and Jeffrey huddled like lost souls outside my door. As soon as
they saw me, they smiled shamelessly and followed me inside.
“It’s been a while since the divorce. Is it over yet?” I showed them no kindness, feeling only
irritation.
Jeffrey took a deep breath, finally speaking. “I’m here to apologize, Rebecca. I misjudged you. Sylvia led me astray, but my heart has always been with you. Let’s remarry, please?”
Lucy nodded eagerly. “Yes, Rebecca, you and Jeffrey have a deep bond, and I’m sure you feel the same. Getting back together is the best outcome.”
“After all that’s happened, your love will be stronger than ever. I’ll even treat you like my own daughter.”
I gave a cold laugh. “Oh? Not afraid anymore that I might cause the Davis family to end without an heir?”
Jeffrey’s face fell at my remark. “I’ve had some tests done. I know now you did everything for me. I understand you want to be a mother, so the Davis family won’t end. Once we’re remarried, you can start IVF. I’ve already arranged for a relative to donate.”
“That way, the child will still be part of the Davis family. Your child.”
I shook my head.
s no need. You and Sylvia should start a family and raise her child together. If one isn’t enough, I’m sure she’d be willing to give you a few more. That would even save the money for IVF.”
