Chapter 11
Sylvia clung tightly to Jeffrey, “No, Jeffrey, you have to believe me!”
Lucy wanted to slap Sylvia but restrained herself, glancing at her swollen belly. “Sylvia, it’s just a medical checkup. It doesn’t mean we don’t believe you. Don’t overthink it.”
Sylvia knew me well enough to realize I wouldn’t make up a story like this. Though she wasn’t sure if Jeffrey could have children or not, her guilty conscience was clear. Her eyes darted around before she spoke, “Rebecca, I know you’re upset about me being with Jeffrey, but that doesn’t mean you should fabricate results like this.”
“Jeffrey already agreed to leave empty–handed–what more do you want? Do you really need to ruin my family to be happy?”
She tugged on Jeffrey’s arm. “I love you so much. How could I possibly be with someone else? If you go through with this test, you’ll be letting Rebecca laugh at us.”
“Think about it. If you truly couldn’t have children, wouldn’t you know by now? And would she really be so kind as to endure all the pressure from your mom on her own?”
Jeffrey, who was already doubtful about the infertility claim, hesitated further. Seeing a chance, Sylvia tugged on Lucy’s sleeve. “Mom, I shouldn’t be saying this, but your son is very… vigorous. He often keeps me up all night. A man like that can’t possibly be infertile!”
“Think about it! Don’t let Rebecca make a fool out of you.“.
Sylvia’s voice was loud, drawing attention from those nearby. Emboldened by the praise, Jeffrey nodded immediately, “Yes, this test result is fake. I won’t get tested–I trust Sylvia.”
I shrugged indifferently, left the test results on the table, and walked away.
