When he woke up, he went crazy, searching everywhere for me.
Molly said:
“Hasn’t this woman hurt you enough already?
“Why are you still looking for her?
“She hasn’t come to see you once in this whole month!”
“Son, please, let it go. I don’t want you to go crazy like you did two years ago.”
Molly tried to persuade him with a lot of words, but it seemed like he didn’t hear a thing.
He got out of bed, put on his shoes, and ran out of the hospital, heading straight for my
house.
“Joanna, open the door!”
“Joanna!”
Ruben knocked heavily on the door.
I opened it, and there he was–dressed in a hospital gown, wearing slippers, and looking
pale.
Before I could react, his huge frame crashed into me, and he hugged me tightly.
“Joanna, I knew you still have feelings for me!”
I pushed him away.
“What nonsense are you talking about?”
“Don’t hide it. When I was unconscious, you came to take care of me. I know everything.”
After his illness, his voice had softened.

“No, no, you’re imagining things. I never… you’re just dreaming.”
He grabbed my hand again.
“Joanna, I’m sorry. It was my fault before.
“I admit, at first, I treated you like Joella’s shadow, but later on, I truly fell in love with you.
“On the anniversary of her death, I just wanted to remember her, I didn’t expect you to
react like that.”
I pulled my hand away.
“So, you’re saying this is still my
fault?
“If there’s someone else in your heart, then don’t come to disgust me anymore.
“I, Joanna, never took care of you. I’m just that heartless.
“So, please, Ruben, don’t come looking for me again.”
With that, I slammed the door shut.
I ran back to my bedroom, stuffed my ears, and didn’t want to hear any more of his explanations.
I admit, when I took care of him, I did reminisce about the time we spent together.
But more than that, it was out of guilt for him.
Now that he’s awake, I’ve paid my debt to him.
So, we’re even now.
After all, we come from two different worlds, and we’ll never be able to be together.
For the next two months, Ruben never came looking for me again.
