“Hiss!”
I sucked in a sharp breath. Before I could retort, he grabbed my shoulders.]
“Aurora, can you stop being so malicious for once! You’ve been bullying Stella since we were kids, always fighting her for everything!”
“Fighting over toys, clothes, Felix, and now–you! You’re even fighting her for the person she loves!“]
“You’ve already won! Everything is yours! I already agreed to marry you, damn it! Why do you still have to be so aggressive? Why can’t you back down even an
inch!”
Stella was lying on the only patch of carpet untouched by the broken glass, crying her eyes
out.[]
Gideon gripped my shoulders and shook me, veins bulging on his forehead, his voice a raw mixture of hatred and despair.[]
But I lowered my head, my eyes fixed on the broken glass jar. It had been snapped in half, revealing the pink, star–shaped cards inside.[]
My breath hitched. Ignoring Gideon’s increasingly furious roars, I blurted out, “It wasn’t me!”
A sharp pain shot up from the cut on my ankle, and the emotional rollercoaster of the day had left me with a pounding headache.[]
I could feel the sting of tears in my eyes, and I saw them reflected in Gideon’s amber irises.[]
But I couldn’t think about any of that. With trembling hands, I clutched his sleeves.[]
Just like I had ten years ago, I wanted to do anything to make him believe me.[]
“Gideon, it wasn’t me! I didn’t bully her! She grabbed me and wouldn’t let go, and I didn’t even push her that hard, I swear!“]]
A glimmer of moisture seemed to flash in Gideon’s eyes, but my own vision was so blurry I couldn’t be sure if it was tears.
But I could feel his ragged breathing starting to even out, and he even raised a hand as if to wipe my tears away.[]
But then, from the side, Stella started sobbing again.[]
“Gideon, don’t hit Aurora. She’s right. She didn’t push hard. It was me. I’m just so useless, I lost my balance and fell!“]
“But, Gideon, I think I twisted my ankle. Can you please take me to the hospital?“[]
Gideon hesitated, his gaze shifting back and forth between me and Stella. In the end, he hardened his heart and pushed my hands away.
“I’ll take Stella to the hospital first. We can talk about this when we get back.“[]
As he bent down to scoop Stella into his arms, he sighed and said in a heavy tone.[]
“Felix and my parents are dealing with the guests. They’re telling everyone we just had a fight and you spoke out of anger. Our wedding, it’s been postponed.“]
“I’ve already agreed, we’ll have the wedding. So just stop making a scene! Wait here for me.” “0
He kicked the broken glass aside with his shoe, stepping thoughtlessly on the pink card as he brushed past me.
And Stella, nestled in his arms, silently clenched her fists at the word “wedding“. The look she gave me was pure, unadulterated hatred.[]
As if I’d lost all feeling, I dazedly knelt and picked up the card, now marred with the print of his shoe.]]
[Don’t be scared, Aurora. Mr. Durand and Felix might like Stella more, but I like you. I like you the most. I only like you!]]
Gideon had given that to me in class, two years after stella came to live with us.[]
Our classmates had all laughed and teased, guessing it was some kind of love note.]
But I only needed one glance at it before the tears came.
