Chapter 30 Locked In

Marshall turned to Sloane and warned, “I don’t expect you to learn anything. Just stay quiet and graduate without causing
trouble.”
“You should be thanking Father,” Samantha added sweetly. “You finally get to go back to school!”
Sloane slammed her chopsticks onto the table and stood up. “I’ll handle my schooling myself. I don’t need your charity.” Conrad bristled at her attitude. “Too good for St. Fortuna? What, you think you can get into Stonebridge University?”
Sloane turned her head slightly, her gaze icy. “And what if I do?”
The room fell dead silent for a moment, then erupted into laughter.
Boone laughed so hard he almost fell out of his chair. “You? Get into Stonebridge University? That place is packed with the country’s top students! You, who didn’t even finish high school, have the nerve to talk big?”
Samantha almost burst out laughing, but she managed to hold it in. “Sloane, you’ve been stuck in that little corner all these years, so you probably don’t know that Stonebridge University is the top university in Stonebridge. It’s not just something anyone can get into. Besides, the admissions exam for Stonebridge University is already over.”
Adrian, who had been silent until now, narrowed his eyes. “Unless… you’re thinking of taking the special admissions exam?” Conrad scoffed. “As if she could get a special slot.”
Samantha seemed to be deep in thought. She bit her lip and asked, “Sloane, you didn’t, did you? Ask Mr. Hawthorne for a special admissions spot at the birthday banquet.
Conrad’s smile froze on his face. If Lucas intervened, it really would not be a big deal.
Samantha wore an expression as if she wanted to say something but hesitated, then softly added, “Sloane, you… you didn’t lose out, did you?”
She was subtly implying that Sloane had used her charms to please Lucas in exchange for the special admissions spot. Boone sneered openly. “Shameless.”
Looking at their ugly faces, Sloane felt disgusted. “Think whatever you want. But remember this. Whatever I want, I fight for it myself. I don’t need to rely on anyone else.”
Then, she turned and left the dining room, leaving the Rivers family stunned.
Watching her retreating figure, Samantha’s eyes gleamed with resentment. “Father, you really should keep a closer eye on Sloane. If she stirs up trouble… and the family suffers…”
Marshall’s face darkened at her words. Now that the engagement with Lucas had boosted his standing within the family, he could not afford for anything or anyone to jeopardize his plans.
The day of Stonebridge University’s special admissions exam arrived.
Sloane packed her things and got ready to leave, only to find that her door would not open.
No matter how hard she twisted the doorknob, it refused to budge. She quickly realized that someone had locked it from the outside.
Sure enough, she soon heard Samantha’s mocking voice from beyond the door. “Sloane, don’t waste your energy. Father had the door locked. You’re not going anywhere today.”
Even if she did not truly believe Sloane could pass the exam, Samantha
was
not about to take any chances.
