Chapter 16 I Will Get Revenge for You
“Adrian, what did you mean by that?” Helen perked up the moment she heard him.,
Marshall also turned to look at Adrian, his face dark as he began to think. “Are you saying the Hawthorne family is stalling for time, trying to find a chance to call off the engagement?”
Adrian nodded slightly. “Lucas is dying. They need someone to bring him luck in marriage. He can’t just wake up and kick out the person who helped save his life, right? They’ll need to wait for the right moment. Otherwise, would the Hawthorne family even consider her?” Adrian gave Sloane a contemptuous glance.
Everyone turned to look at Sloane. She was skin and bones, had no figure to speak of, and even the most beautiful clothes looked like a waste on her.
They desperately ignored Sloane’s strong bone structure and kept pushing her further into the mud.
Marshall secretly nodded. He thought Adrian made sense. Even though losing the marriage alliance with the Hawthorne family was frustrating, he figured the Hawthorne family would still have to compensate the Rivers family somehow, so he started calculating again.
Sloane didn’t care to watch their ugly mouths move any longer and turned around to leave the Rivers Residence.
A black van stopped in front of her. Lena got out and respectfully opened the door for her.
Before long, the car pulled up in front of a quiet cemetery.
Sloane stood in front of a gravestone, holding a bouquet of simple daisies in her hands. On the stone were the words “Our beloved daughter, Chloe Hayes.”
She slowly crouched down and gently placed the daisies in front of the grave. In a soft voice, she said, “Don’t worry, Chloe. I’ll get revenge for you.”
Five years ago, when she had just returned to the Rivers family, Chloe was only a newly hired maid. She’d been assigned to stay by Sloane’s side and suffered just as much scorn and bullying from the others.
Chloe had a kind heart and couldn’t stand watching Sloane get mistreated. Since she was a little older, she always shielded Sloane.
She was the only person in the Rivers family who had ever shown Sloane warmth.
Just as Sloane was planning to ask her master for help and escape with Chloe, Chloe died without warning or explanation.
Samantha even framed her for Chloe’s death, and because of that, the Rivers family had her sent to an asylum.
For the past five years, she had never stopped thinking about making Samantha and every single person in the Rivers family- pay for it.
Sloane slowly stood up, her eyes slightly red. “What the Rivers family owes us, I’ll take back double.”
On the way back, a light rain began to fall. Sloane leaned back in her seat and closed her eyes.
Lena drove slowly, hoping Sloane could get some rest.
“I’ll give you a list of herbs in a bit. Go to Everherb Hall and have them prepare everything according to the list and send it to the Hawthorne Mansion,” Sloane said, opening her eyes. The clarity had returned to them.
“Yes,” Lena answered quickly.
Sloane continued, “The herbs I marked on the list are rare. It might take some extra effort to get them. Tell the people at Everherb Hall that money isn’t an issue, as long as the quality is guaranteed.”
After all, Lucas had plenty of money.
“And one more thing,” Sloane added after a pause, “Please look after the Hayes family for me.”
Chloe had died in the Rivers family home. Her family probably didn’t want to see anyone from the Rivers family ever again. She figured it was best not to disturb their peaceful life.

“Yes, Ms. Rivers,” Lena replied quickly.

When Sloane returned to the Rivers house, the sound of piano music floated down from the second floor. She didn’t even have to guess–it had to be Samantha practicing in the piano room.
To be fair, Samantha was talented. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have had the guts to announce so early that she was going to study under the famous pianist, Jack Bernette.
But Sloane didn’t want her getting too full of herself.
When it came to the marriage alliance between the Hawthorne family and the Rivers family, many people shared Adrian’s view–they thought it was just a temporary arrangement from the Hawthornes. Still, there were always a few self–important “smart” people eager to suck up to the Rivers family.
Marshall took full advantage of it and basked in his newfound status within the Rivers family.
Sloane, when she found out, simply smiled. The higher he climbed, the harder he would fall. Sloane decided to let him enjoy it for a few more days.
Two days later would be Samantha’s 18th birthday. The Rivers family was planning a huge celebration for their precious daughter, sending out invitations everywhere.
Not a single person remembered that Sloane and Samantha had been born on the same day.
