Chapter 23
I hurried out, still in the dress I had worn to toast the guests.
Mom stood in the orange glow of dusk, her eyes red as she looked at me. “I kept thinking about it, and I just…I just had to come and see you.”
Uncle David and Ethan stood by the car a short distance away, and their eyes also looked suspiciously red.
Mom took out a gift box, her hand trembling as she handed it to me. “It’s a pair of necklaces.”
“At the auction, they said it symbolizes eternal unity.”
“I thought it would be just right for you and yourhusband.”
I wasn’t sure of the value and hesitated to accept it.
But she pressed it firmly into myhand. I didn’t know what to say.
After a moment, I managed to whisper. “Thank you.”
Suddenly, Mom reached out and held my wrist.
Her voice quivered with sorrowful sobs. “Emily, my child, happy wedding day.”
“All these years… I’ve failed you so much.”
My eyes reddened instantly. A lump formed in my throat, and I shook my head. “No, you haven’t owed me anything.”
“You never did anything wrong, never owed anyone.”
”
Tears slid down her cheeks. Her voice caught, filled with endless grief. “Can you…call me ‘Mom‘ one more tie?”
I lowered my gaze. When I finally spoke, I barely dared to look at her. “Mom.”
She suddenly reached out, holding me tightly, so tightly.
I heard her trembling voice. “My Emily…the daughter I brought into this world…”
“You’ve always been such a good girl. Such a good girl.”
My tears fell silently, landing among the withered autumn leaves. Luckily, no one seemed to be watching.
It was strange… after all these years. I lened against her shoulder, still catching that faint, familiar scent.
I couldn’t describe it, but it was the most comforting thing in the world.
Hoarsely and earnestly, I said, “Just to see that you’e found your way through, to see you living well now…‘
“It makes me happier than I can say.”
Morn hugged me even tighter.
I heard her gentle voice. “You must find happiness too, Emily. Try not to let the past hold you back.”
I nodded firmly. “Mm.”
Aft a long while, she finally let go. I saw her off, watching her and Uncle David get into the car.
Ethan opened the car door, then, with a sullen, awkward expression, looked at me.
“Seriously, if you ever run into trouble, just call. Did you really think I wouldn’t care?”
I nodded in my blurred vision. “I understand.”
I watched the car drive away.
