Chapter 15
I held the cake carefully. Through the clear box, I could see the tempting pink frosting inside. I instinctively swallowed.
I had never had a birthday cake. I didn’t even know what cake tasted like. To this day, I didn’t know the exact date of my birthday–or my mother’s.
Clutching the cake box carefully, I hailed a taxi.
The driver kept sking me where my parents were.
I kept my head down, clutching the ribbon on the cake box, and replied uneasily. “They’re…at home. I can go back by myself.”
Fortunately, he didn’t kick me out and took me to the address I’d given.
By the time I arrived at the Millers, night had fallen completely.
Several cars were parked in the front yard, and the estate was brightly lit inside and out.
It seemed there were guests. I walked into the yard, climbed the steps, and saw the front door slightly ajar.
I knocked and rang the doorbell, but there was no answer. Inside, I could faintly hear laughter, as if no one had noticed me.
I stood outside for a while before gathering my courage.
I carefully took off my shoes and pushed the door open, stepping inside.
In the living room, a pink cake was already set out. It was much bigger than the one I had bought, multi–tired.
On the top layer were beautiful princess dolls and a glittering golden crown.
Ethan was cheering excitedly. “Let’s celebrate properly! Today’s the first day our hloe officially lives with us!”
A young, refined couple stood to the side, their eyes smiling in gentle crescents. “For Chloe to be taken in as the Millers‘ goddaughter is such a blessing.”
Their features resembled Chloe’s. They were probably Chloe’s parents.
I looked carefully and confirmed that Mom wasn’t there before edging closer to them.
I missed Mom terribly. I wanted to see her.
But I was also afraid that if she saw me, she would lose control again.
Still, no one noticed me. I mustered my courage and called out, my voice trembling “U–ncle David.”
Uncle David was holding a cake candle, about to light it, and said with a gentle smile, “Ethan, go call Mom and Chloe to come down—”
Before he could finish, he heard my voice. His tone and smile froze at the same time.
He turned to look at me. Then he was silent for a long momentas if he didn’t recognize me.
After a while, as if remembering something, his expression turned extremely unpleasant.
“You… What are you doing here? Who said you could come?!”
“Weren’t you supposed to stay at school the whole time?!”
My grip tightened on the cake box’s ribbon. The simple box suddenly felt unbearably heavy.
Yet compared to the one on the table, it was obviously small.
I couldn’t hand it over, no could I leave it behind.
A bitter taste rose in my throat, and I whispered helplessly, “It’s inter break.”

“The school… the school said I can’t stay anymore.”
Uncle David’s expression turned extremely impatient. “Then stay somewhere else! Didn’t I give you money?!”
“Emily, I put a hundred thousand on that card! Don’t tell me you’ve spent it all already?!”
“Didn’t I tell you?! The Millers will only cover your basic living expenses. We won’t fund your reckless spending!”
I wanted to explain that there was still plenty of money, just nowhere would let a child stay alone.
But Uncle David was furious. He seemed filled with loathing, enraged.
In the rapid stream of scolding, I found no chance to speak.
He shot a frantic glance toward the upstairs, his eyes filled with urgency and anxiety. “Enough! I’ll have the housekeeper wire you another hundred thousand!”
“Get out of here, now! Don’t you dare let Laurà see you!”
I pleaded, “That’s not it. I don’t want money, I just want-
From the stairs, Mom’s gentle voice rang out. “Sweetie, after you blow out the candles, what wish will you make?”
She was holding Chloe’s hand. Behind her was Michael, her former husband and perhaps still her husband now.
She lowered he gaze to look downstairs–and unexpectedly met my eyes.
Her gentle expression froze on her face for a single, suspended moment.
