Chapter 6
I didn’t know when Liam left.
But he didn’t bother me again.
A week later, a colleague mentioned that Mr. Wang’s company had lost its partnership with us.
Apparently, they’d been flagged for violations.
I knew immediately–Liam had pulled strings.
He was smart. He knew how to hit back without making a mess.
But I didn’t think about it much.
I had a new life to enjoy.
During the National Day holiday, I went home to visit my parents.
And ran into Chloe.
Right at my doorstep.
She had been waiting for me.
Our eyes met, but the pride she once carried was gone. All that remained was bitterness and resentment.
“You won,”
“she spat. “Liam won’t even let me near him anymore.”
Her voice dripped with hatred.
“I just don’t get it. What does he see in you?”
“Are you prettier than me? Younger? Better at being cute?”
She stepped closer, glaring at me.
“You’re no better than me. You just got lucky–you met him first, that’s all.”
Her voice grated on my nerves.
I sighed. “Are you done? Send me twenty thousand.”
Chloe blinked, confused, then let out a mocking laugh.
“You must be feeling pretty smug. But don’t forget, you’re in London. I’m still in his department.”
“No matter how much he loves you, distance creates cracks. I’m right beside him, and I’ve got the upper hand. Who knows how this ends?”
She was picking a fight.
I was already over it.
I turned away.
“He’s all yours. Go sleep with him if you want. I’ll pay for the hotel.”
Chloe looked stunned,
Then, from the shadows around the corner, a figure stepped out.
It was Liam.
He looked gaunt, unshaven, his eyes hollow.

Nothing like the sharp professional he used to be.
I stopped walking and looked at him calmly.
Chloe panicked, fixing her hair and forcing a smile.
“Mr. Carter, you’re here too? I was just passing by…”
“Get out,” Liam said, voice low and flat.
Chloe’s eyes welled up.
She grabbed his arm, crying, “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have come to Ava, I just–I couldn’t help it. Why am I not good enough? Why?!”
“I said get out.”
She stumbled away like a broken doll.
Liam stared at me, but for a long time, couldn’t say anything.
I turned to go inside. That’s when he finally spoke.
Ava… I’m quitting. I’m moving to London. I’m going to chase you again.”
I didn’t respond.
He tried to smile. “I know I messed up. So I’m going to make it right. Wait for me in London. I’ll come find you.”
His tone was sincere, like he was making a vow.
But
I didn’t need vows anymore.
Still, I said nothing.
Liam grew desperate.
“Ava, give me a chance. I can’t live without you. Let’s start over, please?”
No.
There wasn’t a single part of me that wanted that anymore.
For so long, I had dreamed of building a life with Liam–marriage, partnership, everything.
But now, I just wanted him to stop bothering me.
I let out a quiet sigh.
“Liam, do you really think this is meaningful?”
He staggered, unable to stand straight.
Whatever words he had left never made it out.
Eventually, he turned and disappeared into the darkness.
I went back inside, gave my mom her gift, and slept better than I had in weeks.
After the holiday, I returned to London.
Mom didn’t want me to go.
I told her I’d be back in three years, tops.
She said she’d support whatever I chose, as long as I was happy.

You think I’m gonna fall for lusion?
And so, I threw myself into work again.
I’d always been a little lazy, never had big ambitions.
With Liam leading the way all those years, I never learned to make decisions for myself.
But now that I was alone, I suddenly found my drive.
I was going to become the general manager of this branch.
That goal? Non–negotiable.
Two years later, I got promoted.
And I was already reaching for the next step.
I went home several times during those years, but rarely ran into Liam.
Maya said he gave up on quitting.
He stayed at the same company, burying himself in work, ignoring everything else.
Of course, plenty of women threw themselves at him.
He was good–looking and had status, after all.
As for Chloe–she clung to him shamelessly, becoming the office joke.
Eventually, after several outrageous stunts, she was fired.
That’s the thing about the workplace. It’s not a dating pool. You’ve got to be professional.
I never dated again.
Nothing ever felt worth it.
Sometimes, late at night, I’d think of that face from five years ago–the one that handed me coffee with quiet focus.
But I’d always laugh, shake it off.
I had already moved on.
