He swiped his phone screen, opening Linda’s solo interview video.
On the screen, Linda sat gracefully with her legs crossed, exuding composure and elegance. Every move spoke of her intellect and poise.

Ivan watched the woman on the screen, a faint smile unconsciously appearing on his face.
He lit a cigarette, biting it between his lips as he replayed the video over and over again.

“Got it. Eight bucks.”
Ivan responded, his thumb brushing over the screen as he turned off the video and tucked
his phone into his pocket.
He deftly placed the chicken into the fryer, the steam fogging up his eyes.
In this new life, Linda had chosen the path she wanted.
Ivan quietly stayed out of her way.
If fate could truly be rewritten, he wished for Linda’s happiness–even if that happiness no longer included him.
Living out his days with only memories, perhaps, was both his punishment and his
redemption.
The fried chicken was ready–no chili, no ketchup.
“Hey, boss? Where’s the chili and ketchup?”
Ivan gave a self–deprecating smile.
“Sorry, forgot to add them.”
