Bryce’s knuckles whitened. Alex? Who the hell was this guy? Memories of the bridal shop flooded back to him. Alice was in a wedding dress, her face calm as she urged him to answer the phone. He recalled the restaurant, where she had clearly seen himself and Bella acting intimately, yet all the previous questions and accusations had vanished. He had never felt such a sense of panic before, as if he were on the verge of losing something vital.
A flicker of triumph crossed Bella’s face.“Bryce, this is actually better. Alice never deserved you.” Bryce snapped back to reality.“You knew all along?”
Bella, her voice laced with false sweetness, replied, “I… I just didn’t want you to overthink. Bryce, since Alice doesn’t love you anymore, and she’s marrying someone else…doesn’t that give us a chance?”
“Get out!” Bryce furrowed his brow and shouted. Bella, never before subjected to such anger. Over the years, he’d always indulged her, and been compliant with her. When had he ever raised his voice at her?
Bella remained unmoved, her arms wrapping aHappy his neck, her eyes full of feigned affection.“Bryce, am I not as good as Alice?”
Bryce’s eyes were glued to the invitation in his hand. The name Alex burning into his retinas like branding irons. He shut his eyes in agony. No, something was definitely off.
In a sudden rush, he yanked Bella out of the car and floored the gas pedal, running several red lights in his desperate search for the truth.
He screeched to a halt in front of Alice’s house, only to find a black Bentley already parked there. Alice, in a stunning cheongsam, entered with a man on her arm. Bryce froze, his hand hovering over the car door, paralyzed by a lack of courage.
The cheongsam…he remembered. She’d had it custom–made half a year ago, after they’d set the wedding date. Back then, she’d been so happy, excitedly planning their seaside wedding repeatedly asking if they could have it at sunset, exchanging vows as the sun dipped below the horizon. When had everything changed?
Bryce waited in the car for three long hours, repeatedly calling Alice, but she didn’t answer. Then, a call came in. His heart raced as he answered without even glancing at the caller ID
“Alice, I’m at…”
“Bryce, it’s me, Bella’s in trouble. You need to come back now!”
