Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Nelson glanced behind me and asked, “Is she in the restroom?”
I remained silent.
Nelson looked at the item I was holding and said, “At least you had the decency to bring a gift for Tiffany.”
Tiffany chimed in, “That wouldn’t be some cheap junk, would it? I won’t accept garbage gifts,”
Nelson ripped the red silk covering off the urn.
any screamed, “What the hell is this? You crazy woman, what do you mean by this?”
Nelson’s expression changed drastically as he angrily shouted at me, “Cara Ruskin, what the hell are you doing? Today is Tiffany’s birthday! Why are you holding an urn?”
I said, “Didn’t you tell me to bring Mom?”
Hearing my words, Nelson jumped up in anger, yelling, “Not only are you ruining Tiffany’s birthday, but you’re also cursing my mother!”
He pushed me hard, knocking the urn from my hands. It fell to the ground, and the gray ashes scattered everywhere.
Nelson cursed, “I shouldn’t have let you come! Are you deliberately trying to cause trouble? Haven’t you scared Tiffany enough?”
Friends nearby noticed the commotion and rushed over to scold me.
“Cara, this is too much! It’s Tiffany’s birthday; how could you bring this?”
“We know you don’t like Tiffany, but she and Nelson are childhood friends. Their relationship is normal. Even if you’re upset, you shouldn’t do this.”
“Cara, why do you have to make a scene at a birthday party?”
Nelson’s face was ashen as he stepped up to me and slapped me hard across the face, shouting, “Apologize to Tiffany! Right now!”
Tiffany was sobbing beside him, but I could tell her tears were fake.
“Cara, hurry and apologize.”
“Don’t make Nelson angry; you’re in the wrong for doing this.”
“Who brings an urn to a birthday party? You’re outrageous.”
I knelt on the ground. Tiffany wore a smug smile.
I wasn’t kneeling to apologize to Tiffany. I wanted to gather the ashes scattered on the floor.
When Nelson realized my intention, he kicked the ashes away. The wind carried them further.
Tiffany suddenly rushed at me, punching and kicking. “You crazy woman! I finally have a birthday, why are you ruining my day?”
“I’ll fight you!”
She scratched my face with her nails, leaving numerous bloody marks. Nelson stood by, watching coldly.
When I tried to fight back, he kicked me in the back. Grabbing my hair, he pulled me away from Tiffany. She lunged at me again, kicking my abdomen.
Her High heels made the blow excruciating, causing me to break into a cold sweat,
I glared at Nelson, gritting my teeth, “Nelson, I’m your wife! Are you even human?”
Nelson retorted, “I help my friends, not my family. You did something unreasonable; do you expect me to support you?”

I scoffed,” “Tiffany is someone who was discarded; she came back because no one wanted her. You treat her like a treasure. How ridiculous!”
Tiffany exploded at my words, “You’re the one who’s been discarded!”
“Nelson, you should divorce her. Tell her who’s truly unwanted.”
“If you don’t divorce her, I’ll disappear from your life forever.”
Tiffany’s words panicked Nelson; he didn’t want to lose her. He held her tightly, saying, “Tiffany, give me some time. You know my mom’s health is fragile; she won’t let me divorce.”
“If I divorce now, I’m afraid Mom will be affected.”
“You know how hard it was for her to raise me; I don’t want anything to happen to her.”
Tany cried, “I don’t care! I want you to divorce her now!”
Nelson glanced at me, then back at Tiffany, saying, “I’ll teach her a lesson for you.”
With that, he approached me, his face twisted with rage, as if we had a blood feud. “Cara Ruskin, you brought this on yourself. Don’t blame me for being ruthless.”
He then unleashed a flurry of punches and kicks. I was left gasping for breath; if not for the friends who intervened, he might have killed me.
Panting, Nelson said, “If it weren’t for my mom, I would have divorced you long ago.”
“Cara Ruskin, you better realize your place. You mean nothing to me.”
“Tiffany is the woman I love most.”
Though I had known this for a long time, hearing it from his lips filled me with despair.
All those years of love couldn’t compete with a woman who had been discarded.
Tiffany had initially rejected Nelson for not being wealthy enough, and now she could simply turn back to claim all his love.
What was I? Just a worthless nothing.
I said, “Nelson, you don’t have to worry about Mom being upset. She won’t be–she’ll never be again.”
I pointed at the ashes scattered on the ground, my voice piercing, “That’s Mom. She’s dead; these are her ashes.”
My words stunned everyone into silence.
Seeing their shocked expressions, I continued, “While you and Tiffany were on vacation, I called you countless times, but you never answered.”
“That day was the day Mom was cremated, and I was the one who sent her off alone.”
“The son she raised single–handedly couldn’t even see her off one last time.”
“Nelson, this is all your doing.”
Nelson fell to his knees, panicking as he tried to pick up the ashes from the ground.
He muttered, “No, it can’t be true!”
“Mom can’t be dead; she wouldn’t die.”
Tears streamed down his face, as if a dam had burst.
He knew the hardships his mother endured to raise him.
Tiffany suddenly pointed at me, “It’s all your fault! You didn’t take care of Auntie!”
“You killed Auntie, Cara Ruskin; it’s all your fault!”
