Chapter 3
When Robin heard Vera’s words, he froze for a moment.
After what seemed like an eternity, he quietly withdrew his hand from Vera’s arm.
“Vera, I’m already married.”
In the same place, it was as if Robin saw through Vera’s face, glimpsing the youthful me–running toward him with abandon, determined, unwavering.
“I love my wife,” he said, rubbing his wedding ring on his middle finger, remembering the times he and I shared.
ave of panic washed over Robin, like his heart was being gripped tightly. It was as though something had quietly slipped away, something he could no longer hold on to.
I stood not far away, watching Robin rush home, whispering softly, “Our ten years have ended.”
“It’s getting late, I’ll leave now,” Robin said, walking quickly, not even hearing Vera calling him from behind.
He returned home, but the house was still cold and empty. No one was there.
Robin seemed lost. He called me again and again, but no one answered.
He sent message after message, but none were replied to.
Eventually, he called my mom.
“Mom, did Eden come to your place? She’s been missing since last night. Can you tell her I’m sorry and ask her to come back home?”
On the other end of the phone, my mom was silent for a moment.
“You’re saying Eden is missing?”
Upon hearing that I was gone, my mom immediately panicked.
“What could she be doing at this hour? She’s not even working now.”
Robin opened his mouth as if to say something, but no words came.
“I… I don’t know.”
How could Robin Bright know what I was doing? How could he understand how my day was spent?
All his time was devoted to Vera Hicks.
To make Vera happy, to make her feel cared for, ever since she came into our home, the entire family’s menu had changed,
Vera liked Sichuan cuisine–spicy and bold–so Robin started cooking for her, learning bit by bit how to prepare the dishes.
Then, he made the rest of the family eat with her.
But I had just given birth to Eve. I couldn’t handle spicy food, especially since I’ve always preferred a light diet.
Watching Robin busying himself in the kitchen, I realized that, in all the years we had been together, he had never once cooked a meal for me. And there Vera was, standing by his side, helping him.
Vera was quite the beauty, tall and slender, their figures intertwined–a perfect match in every way.
I gazed at myself vaguely in the mirror. After giving birth to Eve, I had gained over 140 pounds. Despite my strict self–control, the weight wouldn’t budge. My skin had stretched, covered in stretch marks, making me feel utterly repulsive.
My face had grown older, the fine lines at the corners of my eyes making me look tired. Compared to the young and beautiful Vera, I was completely
unremarkable.
