Chapter 17
After a long while, I finally heard her voice–and it was still calm. “The cake is beautiful.”
She reached over and took the cake from my arms.
I lifted my eyes and looked at her. Tears welled up in my eyes.
I bit my lips tightly, my whole body trembling.
I looked at Mom–the same Mom who had once held me tightly in her arms.
Suddenly, I mustered up a great deal of courage. I reached up and pushed my bangs aside.
My voice trembling slightly, I tried to speak steadily, “I… I cut a lot of my eyebrows.”
“I think… I think they don’t look the same anymore.”
Actually, all those scars on my body, even the ones that had healed, I had tried to pick at them.
But the scars would bleed again. Once the blood dried, new scars formed.
Over the past six months, I had tried countless times, and the scars only got bigger.
So all I could do was show Mom my partially trimmed eyebrows.
Mom froze, looking at me with a hint of astonishment. I saw her eyes turn slightly red.
A voce screamed shrilly in my head, as if it were about to burst out.
It pleaded urgently, full of longing. [Mom, tell me!]
[Tell me, does it really look different?]
But I didn’t get an answer. I gripped the edge of the cair tightly, my body shaking violently.
After a long while, all I saw was Mom withdraw her gaze and look out the window.
She said softly, “Don’t cut them again next time; you could hurt yourself.”
My heart sank. It felt as if I had been lifted high into the air only to be dropped to the ground.
I realized that even if I had cut off so much of my eyebrows, they still resembled me.
Mom rented a house for me and even found a housekeeper that same night.
The house was very close to the elementary school, just across the street.
She made the bed herself, tidied the desk, and straightened up the entire house.
Once she finished, she called m to sit with her on the sofa and opened the cake.
She cut two pieces–one for me, one for herself.
She took a bite, looked at me, and said, “It’s sweet. You eat, too.”
My hands were shaking uncontrollably. I quickly grabbed a fork and took a bite.
The sweet cream melted in my mouth. So this was the taste of cake. It really was so delicious.
I nodded firmly. “Yes, it’s very sweet!”
Mom didn’t say anything more and continued eating her piece.
I ate spoonful by spoonful, thinking how nice it would be if the cake were a little bigger. Big enough for Mom and me to eat together just a little longer.

It really was sweet, though it didn’t feel like the sweetness was only from the cake.
It was just too delicious. I tred to eat slowly, but the plate was soon empty.
When I looked up again, Mom had set down her plate.
She looked at me, her voice still calm. “I’ve paid ten years‘ rent for this house, and the housekeeper’s salary is covered.”
“It should be enough until you reach adulthood.”
“You’ll also get another deposit in yor account, enough fo your living and schooling.”
I stared at Mom in silence.
While trying to process her words in my mind, she spoke again, “Emily, from now on…Don’t go back to the Millers, and please don’t tr to contact me agai.”
The lingering sweetness of the cream suddenly turned slightly bitter in my mouth.
After a long while, I nodded stiffly. “Yes… I understand.”
