Chapter 17
Silvana stepped out of the car. When she entered the lobby, her phone rang. It was a local number that she didn’t know. She immediately declined it, because her client wouldn’t be calling this late. Then she walked into the elevator.
The moment she got home, she rushed into the bathroom. She was newly pregnant, and her body was still adjusting to it. She needed to have regular checkups at the hospital, which made her feel so anxious and insecure.
A WhatsApp notification suddenly popped up on her phone screen. She tapped it and saw a friend request.
It was Kendrick.
“Add me back.” He left a note.
She was furious last time and deleted Kendrick on WhatsApp. She was determined to sever all ties with him.
This time was no exception. Without hesitation, Silvana denied it and ignored him.
Kendrick wouldn’t give up. He registered a new account to add her. He even called her, asking why she deleted him.
Silvana grew impatient. She called him back. “Will you stop?”
Kendrick fell silent for a moment before he said, “Unblock me.”
“What do you want?”

“Are you messing with me? Do you think this is funny? Three years, and it’s not enough for you?”
“Why do you think I’m messing with you?” he asked, his voice deep and oddly persuasive.
Her peace of mind was disturbed again. “If it’s not important, don’t ever contact me again. I wouldn’t want Christina to be jealous of me.”
Instead of hanging up, Kendrick said, “After we divorced, I said you could ask for anything you wanted. That still stands.”
He promised to give her the house at Serenity Estates, but Christina took a shine to it. So, he probably wanted to make it up to her.
Silvana didn’t want to make things difficult for herself and said, “Fine. Then I’d appreciate it if you and Christina could stay away from me. I don’t want to see either of you ever again.”
Kendrick didn’t end the call. “I’m outside your apartment building.”
“What do you want? Why can’t you give me a break?”
“I’m that terrible?”
“Yes.”
Kendrick chuckled. “Then why did you marry me?”
“I misjudged you. Anyone could make that mistake. It’s my fault for not seeing your true nature.”
Silvana felt drained, her voice softening. “Kendrick, I don’t owe you anything. Please. I’m begging you. Please leave me alone.”

The next second, her phone rang again. Silvana assumed it was Kendrick, but seeing Dianna’s name on the screen made her feel so relieved, and she picked it up.
“Silvy, what’s the latest on Olivia?”
Silvana pulled herself together and said, “I don’t know. It’s not my
concern.”
“What’s wrong with your voice? Did something happen?”
“Kendrick called me just now and affected my mood.”
“What did he want this time? Did he ever stop? Christina has already given you a hard time. How did he have the face to come after you? Was he sticking up for her again?”
“He just followed me home. I don’t know why.”
“What the hell?”
“I have no idea!”
Silvana didn’t know why he did that. She just found it weird.
Dianna said, “If he comes after you again, who knows what he might do. He’s a total prick! You have to take care of yourself. Why don’t you move in with me?”
“Relax. He’s not that crazy!” But thinking about how unpredictable Christina was, Silvana felt a bit uneasy.
“He doesn’t know you are pregnant. If he finds out and tells Christina, she will make a big deal out of it. We have to be careful. Nothing can go wrong!”

“You’re right.” Kendrick wasn’t fond of kids. If he discovered that she carried his, he wouldn’t let it go, so she couldn’t take any chances or make any mistakes.
Dianna added, “I’ll come with you to your next doctor’s appointment.
“Sure.”
Her baby was only a few weeks old. She should have a hospital visit next week.
Dianna hesitated. She tried to say something but couldn’t find the right words. Silvana noticed this and asked her what happened.
Dianna replied, “There’s something I didn’t tell you. That night, Kendrick said marrying you was just for fun, and it wasn’t serious. All their friends heard it.”
“I know.” She hadn’t had many encounters with Kendrick’s friends, and he rarely brought her to their gatherings. She never asked because she trusted him. In retrospect, marrying him was so ridiculous. He didn’t love
her at all.
“Silvy, are you OK?”
“I’m fine. I won’t be sad. We’re divorced, so all of this means nothing to
Don’t worry too much.” Silvana managed a smile. Her heart was numb, and she couldn’t feel anything.
- me.
She didn’t want to get revenge or anything.
She was just like her mother, avoiding arguments and staying away from trouble. Unless someone crossed the line, she would fight back fiercely enough to seem unhinged.
That would be too humiliating.

Dianna said, “You should have asked for more. Kendrick was clearly in the wrong. He hurt you, let you suffer, and almost made you lose your job. If I were you, I would’ve fought him to the end and made him pay!”
“What doesn’t belong to me isn’t mine to take.” It wasn’t about taking the moral high ground. She just knew taking his things would make her feel bad. Kendrick, for example, wasn’t hers. Forcing him wouldn’t work, so she just let him go. In doing so, she would free herself.
