Chapter 16
“I went to talk to Silvana because her sister stole my ring. Ken, I didn’t want to cause any trouble. I just want my ring back. It’s my mother’s keepsake. It’s important to me. I’ve already called the police, but her sister denied it, so I was hoping Silvana could talk some sense into her.”
Christina made it so convincing. She even choked up a bit.
Kendrick’s voice softened. “When did that happen?”
“A few days ago.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Christina fell silent.
Kendrick continued, “Whatever it is, you come to me, and stay away from Silvana.”
“Understood. I’m sorry for the inconvenience.” Christina no longer held back her emotions. “I don’t know if I can get my ring back. I was going to wear it to a charity event. It’s really valuable to me.”
“I’ll let Irving retrieve your ring. Don’t worry.”
“Should I apologize to Silvana? I offended her because of her sister.”
“No need.”
Christina curled her lips into a smirk. She knew Kendrick still believed her, but she didn’t expect Silvana to blow the whistle on her.
“Maybe that’s not right. I should apologize for my wrongdoings. I vented

my spleen on her when she had nothing to do with it. Ken, would you mind apologizing for me if you happen to speak to her?”
Kendrick didn’t agree. Instead, he said, “Focus on what you’re doing right now. Don’t worry about this.”
Kendrick ended the call. Then he summoned Irving and asked, “Silvana’s sister stole Christina’s mother’s ring. The police are involved now. Handle this and get the ring back,”
“Got it. I’ll deal with it now,” Irving replied, then turned and walked out.
Kendrick removed her glasses and leaned back against the chair. He recalled that Silvana told her to stop harassing her. Did she really despise him that much?
Even if they were divorced, they parted on good terms.
He rubbed his brows, lost in thought. His phone suddenly rang. He glanced at it and saw the call was from home.
Kendrick didn’t pick it up. When the screen went dark and the ringing stopped, he grabbed the phone to return the call. It was quickly answered by Rosella Villarreal, his mother.
“Your father’s birthday is next week. Will you be back?”
“Not sure yet.” Kendrick hesitated. His eyes narrowed, empty of emotions.
“It’s been three years since you last came home. Your father may not say it out loud, but deep down, he still misses you, and you haven’t even called once. No father and son would grow this distant.”
Kendrick flicked the cigarette ash and stayed quiet.
Rosella knew he didn’t like to wear his heart on his sleeve. She paused and changed the subject. “Since Christina is officially your girlfriend, we

should make time to visit the Walters and have a serious conversation about your future.”
Kendrick rubbed his forehead, looking utterly exhausted. “I’ll deal with it later. No rush.”
“You’re not in a rush, but I am. I long for a grandchild.” Rosella figured that since Kendrick wanted a family, he should act now before anything went wrong. “You’re not getting any younger. Don’t keep Christina waiting. Make the first move!”
Without giving a direct answer, Kendrick tugged at his collar. He was a bit irritated when thinking about what Silvana said. “I’ve got other things to do. Talk to you later.”
“Kendrick?”
The call ended. Kendrick took his coat and walked out.
The wind was chilling. Kendrick drove aimlessly. Before he knew it, he was near Silvana’s studio. He had come here a few times in the past when he and Silvana weren’t divorced, but he never went inside because Silvana wouldn’t let him. He didn’t ask why, so he didn’t know which floor her studio was on.
He parked his car by the roadside, gazing up at the brightly lit building. While smoking a cigarette, his thoughts drifted back to the day of his divorce. Silvana didn’t spare him a glance before she walked away. It appeared that she felt no attachment to him.
That was what he hoped.
But why did he feel so empty?
He didn’t ruminate over it. Suddenly, he saw Silvana emerging from the building, dressed in casual clothes with her long hair cascading down her

back. She seemed happy. But she wasn’t alone. A man in a suit walked alongside her.
Absent–minded, Silvana almost sprained her ankle. Jeromy caught her arm and helped her stand firm. She thanked him.
“I’m OK.”

Jeromy said with concern, “You seem off. Are you sure you don’t want me to drive you home?”
“No. I don’t want to trouble you. Besides, I live nearby. I’ll be home soon.
Jeromy added, “Don’t stress yourself out. Work is important, but you have to take care of yourself.”
“Got it. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. Here comes the taxi. Hop in.” Jeromy opened the car door for her like a gentleman.
Jeromy said, “See you soon.”
The car soon drove off. Silvana leaned against the seat and closed her eyes to rest. After a while, the driver chuckled and joked, “Is that your boyfriend? He seemed to care so much about you.”
Confused, Silvana opened her eyes. She didn’t answer
The driver went on. “You’re a match made in heaven.”
“That’s not my boyfriend.”
“Sorry. My bad. I thought he was.”
“It’s alright.”

Silvana recognized the car behind as Kendrick’s.
But she paid it no mind, thinking it was just a coincidence.

Soon, they reached her apartment building. Through the rearview mirror, she saw Kendrick’s car pull up in front of them.
“Take care. Don’t forget to leave a good review.”
