Calvert paused, a frown crossing his face. He knew very well that Ash’s medicine was the same as his, yet she chose to remain silent, biding her time for him to embarrass himself in front of his grandma.
“Thank you,” Calvert said, placing his pills into the silver bottle with a gentler tone. No matter what, she had generously given his grandma something so precious. It was something truly needed, so he felt it was only right to show his gratitude. Even with all his wealth, he couldn’t buy such a meaningful gift.
Ash was taken aback by his reaction. Sensing the sincerity on his face, she raised an eyebrow. “This is for Dorothy; it’s got nothing to do with you.”
“Fine,” Calvert replied simply.
He found himself increasingly baffled by Ash. She was struggling financially enough to need a sugar daddy, yet here she was, giving away something of great value instead of selling it for her benefit. ‘What kind of person is she?‘ he wondered.
Dorothy’s eyes lit up with satisfaction as she noticed the more relaxed atmosphere between them. “Ash, you treat me so well. I have nothing to repay you with…” She then turned to Calvert. “You almost misunderstood Ash’s kindness. You need to repay her double.”
“Okay,” Calvert replied succinctly, surprising everyone with his obedience.
Seeing this, Dorothy felt very pleased. She was sure they made a perfect match. She was hopeful that they might grow closer. “That’s wonderful! I’ll be looking forward to your wedding!”
“No way! I don’t agree!” A female voice abruptly interrupted their moment.
Ash looked up to see a girl storming in, visibly angry. “She’s not good enough for Calvert!”
“Vania, this is a decision for the adults; you have no right to get involved,” Dorothy said, her tone firm, trying to assert her authority.
Vania flinched at the seriousness of Dorothy’s expression, but as thoughts of Calvert’s happiness gave her courage, she shot back, “If you found someone suitable for him, I wouldn’t oppose it. Like Jade, I’ve been trying to accept her. But I simply can’t stand this woman!”
“That’s rude! Do you have manners?” Dorothy said, leaning on her cane, clearly upset. “This is your brother’s future wife. You should speak with respect!”
“I don’t want her as my family!” Vania exclaimed, ready to share what she had heard. “I heard today that she was kept by someone else and, due to her lack of money, did some disgraceful things.”
As a high school student, Vania struggled even to say the expression “sugar daddy.” This was completely unfamiliar territory for her.
Ash frowned. What had she done to earn this stranger’s disdain?
Calvert’s expression darkened as he watched Dorothy, who had just moments ago been smiling, now clutching her chest with a pale look on her face.
“Shut up!” Calvert’s deep voice held a trace of anger. He sensed what Vania was about to say, but now was not the time to upset their grandma.

Vania felt hurt by Calvert’s sudden sharp tone. Though she was frustrated, she pressed on for his sake. “Calvert, you don’t really know her. Before she was accepted by the Turner family, she was…”
“I said, shut up! Go back to your room right now!” Calvert snapped, annoyance evident on his face.
Vania had never experienced Calvert’s coldness like this before. She had faced mockery earlier that day and didn’t expect. more frustration at home. She was only trying to look out for him.
Overwhelmed by waves of unexpressed pain, Vania shot a glare at Ash before covering her face and running back to her room in tears.
Ash was left bewildered, unsure why she was being blamed when she believed she hadn’t done anything wrong.
Calvert’s gaze remained fixed on Ash. She looked innocent, her bright eyes sparkling like stars, unaware of the chaos swirling around them. His frown deepened. ‘What a great actress she is! If it weren’t for Grandma, I wouldn’t have associated with a woman like her,‘ he thought.
Dorothy didn’t pay any mind to Vania’s words. Trusting her instincts, she turned to comfort Ash. “Little girls can be rude. Don’t let it bother you.”
“Maybe there’s just a misunderstanding,” Ash replied lightly, not overly worried. Since Calvert had stopped Vania, he seemed to know something. If that was the case, she could just ask him directly.
When dinner was ready, Dorothy sent someone to call for Vania, but she refused to come downstairs.
This was Ash’s first time meeting Vania, as she had been at school during Ash’s earlier visit, and things hadn’t gone as Ash had expected.
Feeling a little guilty, Dorothy said, “Don’t worry. I’ll talk to her later.””
“It’s okay,” Ash said with a small smile, trying to reassure Dorothy “Just remember to stay calm and try not to get upset or sad, Dorothy.”
As for Vania, Ash wasn’t too concerned. Even money couldn’t make everyone happy, so she wouldn’t let it bother her.
A shadow flickered across Dorothy’s face when she heard Ash’s words. “My husband used to say the same thing, but now I don’t know where he went. I’m all alone at home. Ash, please come keep me company when you have time.”
Not expecting such a sad topic to arise, Ash quickly nodded in response.
At that moment, Calvert said slowly, “He sent me a message today, asking me to buy that nourishing pill at the auction.” “Really?” Dorothy’s eyes brightened with excitement. “Did he say when he would be back?”
Under Dorothy’s eager gaze, Calvert shook his head somewhat reluctantly. “No, the number he used to message me didn’t answer when I called.”
Dorothy sank back into her chair with a sigh. “Well, he can be stubborn. As long as he’s safe, that’s what matters.”
Ash grasped the situation. After visiting the Snider family several times, she realized she had never met Calvert’s grandfather, and now it made sense. However, she was more troubled by Vania’s claim that she had done something disgraceful. Who was behind that slander?
After dinner, before Dorothy could give an instruction, Calvert offered to drive Ash home.

Chapter 52
The moment they got in the car, the gentle expression on Calvert’s face disappeared.
Ash was taken aback. ‘Is he really going to change so suddenly?‘

“You’re quite the actress!” Calvert said with a hint of sarcasm. If he hadn’t witnessed her close interaction with the boss of Shadow Ventures, he might have believed her. “I stopped Vania from speaking today to avoid upsetting Grandma. Next time, you should apologize to her,” he said, his tone cold, his gaze distant and indifferent.
“Why should I?” Ash shot back, anger bubbling to the surface.
