Chapter 60: The Drama Unfolds
Seraphina froze,
froze, turning to see Mrs. Jennings, her mouth clamping shut.
Mrs. Jennings’s face was ashen, fists clenched, but she didn’t want to lose face in front of Sonya.“Go home.”
Seraphina didn’t dare say anything, glaring at Sonya before hurrying away. Mrs. Jennings called Yang sister in and turned to Sonya.
“So you knew Seraphina’s child wasn’t Julian’s?”

difference does it make
whether I knew
or not?”
“If you knew, you should have told me! I wouldn’t have let Julian marry her! Even if he ended up marrying you!”
“Ha,” Sonya laughed at their logic.“I know you still love Julian. Eight years is a long time.”
“What are you talking about?”
“But you need to restrain yourself. You’re a Reynolds family daughter–in–law now; you need to consider the face of both families. Since you love Julian, you can help him.”
Sonya frowned, confused.

“The Reynolds–Jennings Corporation partnership has problems. Julian is stressed. If ask Henry to be less strict, the deal will go smoother.”
“Mrs. Jennings, are you drunk?” Sonya asked.
“What do you mean?”

Mrs. Jennings’s face darkened.“If that’s your attitude, I’ll make sure Julian breaks good!”

Sonya went inside.
“Don’t think marrying Henry makes you superior. That branch isn’t secure; it’ll fall eventually!” Mrs. Jennings yelled.
Sonya ignored her.
She had no reason to cry. Even if she and Henry didn’t last, their happiness was real. She didn’t regret her eight years with Julian Jennings. If they hadn’t treated her so badly, she could recall many good memories, but now she chose not to.
After dinner, Sonya watched TV, video–chatted with Henry, and had coffee. Going to the rooftop, she saw Julian Jennings sitting on the steps across the street, smoking heavily. Loud arguing came from inside his house.
Mrs. Jennings stormed out, stumbling. She yelled at Julian Jennings, “Either divorce her or make her abort the child! There’s no other choice!”
Julian Jennings rubbed his forehead.“It’s between us two., Can you let us handle it?”

Mrs. Jennings stamped her foot.“I thought she was so well–behaved! I even tried to get you two together! I want to slap myself!”

Julian Jennings threw his cigarette on the ground and stomped on it.
“I don’t need to inherit the Jennings family business!”
“What did you say?”

Mrs. Jennings was about to faint, but Yang sister supported her.
“Sir, you’re hurting your mother. Please stop.”
“I… I wasted my life raising him. What future do I have?” Mrs. Jennings cried. Yang sister led her away.
Julian Jennings kicked the wall. He looked towards Sonya’s second–floor window; she’d closed the curtains and wasn’t looking at him.
The next morning, Sonya ran, then collected a bouquet of roses. Arriving home, she saw Seraphina and Julian Jennings.
Seraphina was seeing Julian Jennings off to work, wearing an apron, looking like an ordinary couple. But there was stiffness between them; Seraphina kissed Julian Jennings, but he didn’t reciprocate.
Sonya didn’t want them to spoil her mood; she hurried home and put the roses in a vase.
After breakfast, Sonya got dressed and video–called Henry.
“I’m going to the old house. What about you?”
“Going to the Reynolds resort. Riding my motorcycle. The sales are down; I’m going undercover.” “Can’t you just get reports from your employees?”
“They don’t even know what’s going on themselves.”
“Take some cool motorcycle pics; send me the best one.”
“One? I can’t choose; they’re all amazing.”
Sonya weeded the old house’s yard. It was filled with childhood memories, lacking a father, but abundant with maternal love.
“Sonya, you’re back!” her neighbor greeted her.
Sonya nodded. “Where are you going?”
“Moore Auntie is sick; I’m visiting her at the hospital.” She added, “Breast cancer, late stage. The prognosis isn’t good.”
Sonya remembered Moore Auntie.
“I had breast cancer twenty years ago. I felt pain; I told your mother. She insisted I go to the

“Your mother was a good person. Everyone loved her. People came to her for advice? The neighbor left. Sonya looked at the old house, lost in thought. An idea struck her She looked at the old neighborhood, inhabited mostly by elderly people and low–income young people. Medical checkups were expensive and time–consuming, leading to delayed treatment. What if she opened a women’s clinic here?
She told Henry, seeking his opinion.
“Don’t ask me. Just tell me. I’ll support any decision you make.”
Sonya kissed him through the screen. He demanded a real kiss when he returned home.
