Meanwhile, at Chicago’s Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Shaw checked his phone. It was 8 AM. He’d stood Julia up on New Year’s Eve. He was about to leave when he accidentally knocked over her phone. Picking it up, he saw a disturbing Instagram post, visible only to Julia: Celebrating New Year’s with the 84th position. Navy Pier’s fireworks lit up our faces. Shaw’s brain went blank. Shaw felt guilty. He showed Sierra the posts.

He’d rushed her to the hospital after her accident and stayed with her until she was safe. He’d planned to see Julia, but Sierra looked so pitiful and begged him to stay for New Year’s. Now he knew she’d been using him to provoke Julia.
Sierra’s face paled; she looked pleading.
