I wanted to head back with Ethan, but in the blink of an eye, he had disappeared. I sniffed
the air carefully, but his scent was nowhere to be found.
Annoyed, I called him. “What are you, Spider–Man? Climbing some wall now?”
“Ninth Alley,” he replied, his voice slightly breathless. Whatever he was doing, it didn’t
sound innocent.
I held the phone away for a moment, rolling my eyes. That tone–it could easily give
someone the wrong idea. But it was indeed Ethan Style.
What was Ethan like in the past? I couldn’t quite remember. He always seemed like a playboy, though.
I squinted, realizing I’d been circling this street for ages. No matter how far I walked, it felt
endless.
Holding my phone tightly, I trudged through the narrow alley. “Why is it taking so long?” My voice, I noticed, had softened.
“Something was missed. I went back to get it,” Ethan answered calmly, no longer out of
breath. “I’ll take you home. Where are you?”
“No, Thanks,” I declined. “I can manage on my own. You should head back. Don’t you have an important meeting today? Uhm… anyway, thanks for coming to find me today.”
Ethan didn’t respond right away, just sighed quietly.
I had reached the “Tattoo” Beta’s place by then and pretended to inspect the surroundings casually. Ignoring Ethan’s silence, I emphasized, “You should go back early. Didn’t you say this place is dangerous? Some even gang up on Alphas.”
Ethan chuckled softly before replying, “Fine. I’ll take that as you caring about me.”

After a brief pause, with the call still connected, I asked if there was anything else.
“Nothing else,” Ethan said. “I’m not about to mess around with anyone here–except you.. What do you think I’d be doing?”
The line went dead with a sharp *beep* before I could respond.
I stared at the blank screen and muttered, “God damn…”
Still, that brief exchange lightened my mood a little. After jotting down some key observations, I left the forest before nightfall.
The next morning, at the café, I felt so light it was as if I might float away.
I hadn’t slept all night. I spent the hours digging into Halix’s records, and finally, in some old pathology reports, I unearthed clues and discrepancies about the wolf plague.
I decided to ignore Nick’s orders. Even if I was the only one, I would uncover the truth
behind the plague and fight for a safe, healthy environment for every werewolf.
But now, I needed allies. Dialing Kai’s number, I said, “Hey, are you free to meet me at Café 32? There’s something important I need to discuss with you.”
A cold laugh echoed through the receiver. “Hah? Should I thank Jesus? You and your
beloved Alpha haven’t completely forgotten me in that freezing basement?”
“Wait, what?” I clapped a hand over my mouth in shock. “You’re still in the forest?”
“Not just that. I’ve practically taken root in this dungeon. How about I plant an omega here and grow a whole forest of them?”
“I’m so sorry! It was an emergency that day, and I completely forgot…” Embarrassed, I quickly added, “But don’t worry, I’ll ask Ethan to let you out immediately.”
It took nearly half an hour of arguing with Ethan before he begrudgingly accepted that Kai wasn’t my mate or anything else suspicious. I felt a chill at the thought–thankfully, Ethan’s

tantrum only lasted thirty minutes. Any longer, and Kai would’ve been doomed.
Another half hour later, Kai showed up, disheveled but alive, with someone I never
expected to see.
Steven.
Seated to my left, Steven was nothing like the aggressive, impatient figure I’d seen at the
bar. Now, he looked calm and reliable.
I stared at Kai in confusion. I knew Steven couldn’t have left the forest without help from
Ethan and Kai. Kai glanced at him briefly but said nothing, simply shrugging in resignation.
Fine. Regardless of how he got here, Steven’s presence was a huge help. As he scanned
through the documents, I shot Kai a look. He frowned at me for a moment, but I said nothing, just kept staring until-*Ding!*–our Mindlink connected.
Exhaling in relief, I warned Kai through the link, *“Don’t share any specific details about the wolf plague investigation with him.”

Kai chuckled, “You’ve changed a lot since I first met you. I mean, you almost seem like an
Alpha sometime.”
