Hector was also shocked by my behavior.
He immediately went to the living room, grabbed a coat, and draped it over my shoulders.
Ruben, still unwilling to give up, saw that he couldn’t convince me and shifted his focus to Mector:
“Handsome guy, listen to my advice.
“This woman spends money like it’s nothing; even your ten–times–salary wouldn’t be enough to cover her expenses.
“You saw how she was just now, acting all loose.”
Hector interrupted him:
“So what? Joanna has her own ideas and abilities. She doesn’t need me to support her!”
“Loose? That’s just your label for her.
“For me, it’s not loose; it’s daring to let go and having character.
“Don’t impose your standards on me.
“I only know one thing: I love her, and that’s enough.”
After that, Hector kissed me right in front of Ruben.
I responded by gently deepening the kiss.
For a long moment, I looked at Ruben, his eyes red, frozen in place.
“What’s the matter? You’re not leaving?
“Do you want to watch us do this right in front of you?”
Ruben gripped the coat in his hand, his eyes bloodshot with anger.

He glared at me and Hector, speaking slowly with each word:
“Fine. You’ll regret this!”
Then, there was a loud *bang* as the door was slammed.
Once Ruben left, my legs gave out, and I collapsed to the ground.
At that moment, my eyes felt empty, like my soul had been ripped away.
That night, I deleted all of Ruben’s contacts.
I cleared every photo of him and me.
I cut off every thought of going back to him.
His words, “You don’t need to work, I’ll take care of you,” had once made me quit a
high–paying job.
His so–called “taking care of me” was really about keeping me trapped by his side,
disconnected from the world, and making me entirely dependent on him.
He had exploited my weaknesses, sure I would never leave him.
Every time we fought, I was the one who compromised, begging him to take me back.
He thought this time would be the same–that I would regret it and cry to go back.
But this time, he was wrong.
I was going to start a new life.
Hector: “Why don’t you stay at my place? We can look out for each other.”
I wanted to refuse, but reality gave me no reason to.
At this point, Hector was the only one who could help me.
