Chapter 18
The officers didn’t say much and took them away. Later, I learned that Jeffrey and Lucy had been doing hospital rounds since our encounter, eventually accepting Jeffrey’s
infertility.
Realizing they’d lost their family and assets–and become a laughingstock for chasing after a “worthless child“-their anger boiled over. In a rage, they physically attacked Sylvia, who was over six months pregnant, punching and kicking her.
Sylvia suffered severe injuries and hemorrhaged, resulting in a miscarriage on the spot.
But rather than calling for help, Jeffrey and Lucy stole her phone, locked her in the house, and left her to fend for herself. Fortunately, neighbors smelled blood and heard her cries, managing to rescue her.
Though Sylvia survived, she lost her uterus from the blood loss. Jeffrey and Lucy’s actions, however, were deemed aggravated assault, escalating to attempted murder.
Knowing these two well, I suspect they came to me seeking an alibi, believing I still had feelings for Jeffrey.
Ultimately, they were sentenced to five years in prison. Sylvia, after recovering, vanished. According to some classmates, she was struggling with her health and facing a hard life.
These events made me reflect on the meaning of life. I resigned from my job, sold the property Jeffrey had left me along
with my own home, and moved to Canada.
The next time I heard about Jeffrey and Lucy was a decade later.
By then, I had a family and children of my own, while Jeffrey and Lucy, ruined and unemployed after their release, could only sell Lucy’s home and retreat to their hometown, where they remained objects of gossip and ridicule.
